These people in collaboration with NYT are running a scam. I have been charged $72 for subscription which I did not request. They won’t cancel my subscription as they claim it was charged by NYT and NYT is telling me it was by The Athletic. Back and forth and I lost $72 and nobody is taking responsibility for the charge . Beware of their subscription scam

If I could give them zero stars I would. Very deceptive subscription model. Unlike any reputable service, they do not warn you before a subscription renews. The fact they did not provide notice 15-45 days in advance for an annual subscription renewal is actually a violation of the Calif California's Automatic Renewal Law 17600.

Same issue as the others - I have an unauthorised charge of $71.99 that suddenly appeared on my credit card. No email, no mention in my on-line NYT account. What the hell is that??

Shady Billing Practices
Same thing that other customers are reporting. My rate went from the $1/month rate to $9.99/month and then without zero notification they billed me $71.99 for a whole year. After a few emails letting them know that I'd be disputing the charge with my credit card company they are finally issuing a refund, so 2 stars instead of 1 star, but still, what a blatant money grab. I actually noticed the charge when I went into to upgrade my subscription to the include the New York Times, but screw that now. Sad, really, I like their sports coverage and I wanted to support the The New York Times in these times. But no way am I supporting an organization that does that. Principles matter. Do better.

I would give a zero star rating if possible. Same problem as every one else. I had cancelled my subscription and they still auto renewed. Am I going to be stuck with this problem for the rest of my life? Better not. Do we all start a collective law suit?

Athletic charging SEVEN TIMES the original price!
The Athletic auto renewed my subscription, which I originally paid $9.99 CAD for, at $71.99. Absolute shysters! They say they don't issue refunds, but I haven't even accessed the services for which they just overcharged me. Avoid them at all costs - they are NOT a respectable business!

Shocking to find how many other people have been scammed by the NY times. long time subscriber of The Athletic, they have just charged me £59.99 for the year without authorising auto renewal. They sent a template email back saying no refunds, with the Zendesk URL updated 6 months ago. I have now cancelled and will be reporting the payment to my CC company. Can believe how much the athletic has gone downhill since the NY times acquisition. Another example of short term gains over long term retention. Will not be taking another subscription out.
