History

The UPSC was established on 1 October 1926 under the Government of India Act, 1919. It was initially set up to recruit civil servants for the British Indian administration.

Headquarters

The headquarters of the UPSC is located at Dholpur House, Shahjahan Road, New Delhi.

Examinations Conducted

The UPSC conducts several examinations including the Civil Services Examination, Indian Forest Service Examination, Engineering Services Examination, and Combined Defence Services Examination, among others.

Role

The primary role of the UPSC is to conduct examinations for appointment to the services of the Union. It also advises the President on disciplinary matters and other matters related to the civil services.

Constitutional Body

The UPSC is a constitutional body as it is directly created by the Constitution of India. Articles 315 to 323 in Part XIV of the Constitution contain elaborate provisions regarding the composition, appointment, and removal of members along with the independent powers and functions of the UPSC.
