Objectives

The main objectives of the AU include achieving greater unity and solidarity between the African countries and the peoples of Africa, defending the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of its Member States, accelerating the political and socio-economic integration of the continent, and promoting and defending African common positions on issues of interest to the continent and its peoples.

Structure

The African Union is made up of both political and administrative bodies. The highest decision-making organ is the Assembly of the African Union, composed of heads of state and government of member states. Other key structures include the Executive Council, the Pan-African Parliament, the African Court of Justice, and the Commission.

Achievements

Since its establishment, the AU has played a significant role in promoting peace, security, and stability on the continent, including the establishment of the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA), the adoption of Agenda 2063 as a strategic framework for the socio-economic transformation of the continent over the next 50 years, and the launch of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to boost intra-African trade.
