Универзитет у Крагујевцу је самостална високошколска установа, чији је оснивач Република Србија. Универзитет је основан 21. маја 1976. године, али су прве високошколске институције у Крагујевцу почеле са радом 1960. године, као одељења београдских факултета. Корени Универзитета у Крагујевцу и високог школства у Србији сежу до далеке 1838. године, када су у Крагујевцу, тада престоном граду обновљене Србије, никле прве просветне, културне и привредне институције и основана прва високошколска институција - Лицеј Кнежевине Србије - који је 1841. године пресељен у Београд и прерастао у Универзитет у Београду.
